The East has 131,262 inhabitants (INSEE, 1 January 2023) across six communes. Saint-André and Saint-Benoît are its main towns; Salazie opens onto one of the island’s cirques, La Plaine-des-Palmistes onto the uplands, and Sainte-Rose onto the lava flows of the Piton de la Fournaise.
